EVNT 1100 – World of Events

Throughout this course, I developed an understanding of the key components that shape different types of events and how history, culture, and place influence their development. By examining event typologies, organizational influences, and current industry trends, I learned how events function as cultural expressions that reflect societal values and shared identities. These concepts were explored and reinforced through a range of projects and assignments that required both critical analysis and practical application.

Through the course objectives, I gained insight into the interconnectedness of people, culture, and global traditions, and how historical contexts continue to shape contemporary events. Studying events with large-scale cultural and social impact highlighted how collective human experiences transcend geographical boundaries. For example, the Hajj pilgrimage demonstrated how religious tradition, place, and global participation intersect, while the Woodstock music festival illustrated how social movements and historical moments can influence cultural expression on a global scale. Overall, this course strengthened my global perspective and helped me recognize the significant role events play in connecting people and preserving cultural meaning.

TMGT 2060 – People, Places and the Toured Landscape

During this course, I explored how historical, geographical, and cultural contexts influence tourism and shape the experiences of both visitors and local communities. A key focus throughout the course was examining a single destination from multiple perspectives, including marketing, consumer, and local viewpoints. This comparative approach encouraged me to think critical and highlighted how tourism experiences can vary significantly depending on cultural background, expectations, and roles within the destination.

Our in-class discussions and interactive activities emphasized reflection and analysis on the intercultural frameworks within the tourism context. These exercises allowed me to consider how tourism practices intersect with diverse worldviews and cultural values. Reflection was a central component of the course, particularly when examining topics such as differing worldviews and the social, cultural, and economic impacts of tourism on host communities. As a result, I developed a deeper understanding of the responsibility involved in tourism development and the importance of fostering culturally respectful and sustainable tourism experiences.

TMGT 4090 – The Culture of Events

Through various projects and assignments, I was able to apply my knowledge of both historical and modern events from around the world. This learning approach helped me recognize the ongoing significance of major global events and their lasting influence on modern society and the events industry today. As a result, I developed a deeper appreciation for how events reflect cultural values, power structures, and social movements on a global scale.
